Reflecting lately, I have wanted to note what the hope is with combating Human Trafficking in Canada. More and more people that can do something significant are talking....taking action. It is an exciting time and yet one knows that it will take some hard work and faithfulness.
Where
do we want to be?
- Safe communities across Canada for vulnerable people- children, impoverished women, immigrants, natives, and at risk youth.
- Effective and comprehensive response for victims of trafficking that brings about lasting change.
- Gender & ethnic equality in that women and girls would be viewed the same as their male counterparts.
- Education presented in many venues for boys and young men that encourages a respectful view towards women and sexuality, i.e. that we would see pornography for what it is.
- Change in Canadian Society such that we would not ever consider other human beings as a commodity to be bought or sold for our own pleasure or personal gain.
- Laws that effectively Prosecute Traffickers: Identify, disrupt and prosecute human trafficking.
- That we see people talking sex tourists in places like Vancouver into going home.
- That Community Needs Assessments are conducted in cities like Winnipeg and then action is taken. (there are some great things going on in MB)
- Trafficking awareness seminars are presented to refugee communities in Red Deer, Calgary and Edmonton (for example).
- That survivor travels to a reserve in Portage La Prairie and acts as an advocate for hurting young girls and giving them tools to prevent them from being trafficked.
- City wide coalitions are established in partnership with law enforcement and victim service providers.
